NFC on Nokia N9

New Nokia N9 will come with NFC, but many people doesn't know how will that work exactly? Let's start.

NFC – or Near Field Communication –  is a technology that enables the transfer of data over a short distance, typically between 4cm or less. So, we’re talking about touching your phone against another to send or receive files.
The Nokia N9 isn't the first Nokia phone that comes with that option.  The Nokia C7 also has the hardware on-board for this feature to work.

The Nokia N9 will have the ability to pair with other NFC devices, such as the Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-505, or various NFC enabled photo frames.
You can even send your contact if other phone equipped with NFC isn't manufactured by Nokia. There are also some NFC-enabled games, such as Angry Birds Free with Magic.

Sending photos from your Nokia N9 is performed in the same way as contact sharing, however only videos filmed from the Nokia N9 can be shared. Meaning any other videos you may have will have to be transferred using alternative methods.
There will be upgrades to the NFC features that will come via future software updates. These will add the ability to send documents of various types and URLs from your phone to another.
Now watch video bellow to see how it works:

Nokia N9 - Camera story

As we already know, Nokia N9 has an 8-megapixel camera, Carl Zeiss lens and autofocus and the hardware to take great photos and videos.

Since they removed the hard key on the side of the phone, Nokia created a soft key, so  when somebody loads up the camera, the camera key is located on the screen.
The Nokia N9 has continuous auto focusing. Whenever you want to take a photo or film something, the Nokia N9 is constantly looking for a subject and adjusts the focus. When it’s in focus, the box on the screen turns to blue, letting you know you’re ready to take the shot. Also, tapping the screen in a certain area will concentrate the phone’s focus on that area.

Once you press the on-screen camera key, the image is taken immediately. It’s the fastest image-capturing phone on the market. In order to take a photo, a series of events must occur: the camera is turned on, viewfinder is ready, focus on the subject and the image is captured. On the Nokia N9, this all happens in 2.6 seconds – much faster than our competitors. For example, the HTC HD7 does all this in 8.3 seconds, the Samsung i5500 Galaxy 5 takes 5.8 seconds and the Apple iPhone 4 does this in 3 seconds.

The camera resolution measures: 3248 x 2448 pixels for 4:3 ratio, 3248 x 2160 for 3:2 and 3552 x 2000 for 16:9. There’s digital zoom up to four times and the camera focus range is from 10 cm to infinity. And for filming, the video recording frame rate is 30 fps. There’s the continuous auto focus, geotagging, dual-LED flash, automatic motion blur reduction, face detection and exposure settings of various types. For full phone specs click here.

The Nokia N9 also has something called non-destructive photo editing which lets you edit a photo, with a way of reversing all the edits should you change your mind. A first in mobile phones. Then you have the option to share your photos to online services, such as Facebook, Flickr, Picasa or even using the built in NFC for device to device transfer.

Nokia N9 UI and Specifications Video

Here is another interesting video of Nokia N9's User Interface (UI). You can see full specifications here.
In video you will also see some of Nokia N9's apps in action.

Android apps supported on Nokia N9?

We have already see that Nokia N900 was running Android apps with Alien Dalvik. Now SlashGear reports that this will also be possible for Nokia N9 running on MeeGo OS. This is a great news for everyone who was worried that there would be lack of games for Nokia N9 (MeeGo OS).
Chris notes availability for Dalvik some time this year for MeeGo, but there are no specific dates yet.

On teh other side, Nokia has Qt, and growing number of Qt apps have already been developed for Symbian^3 which shouldn’t take too much effort possibly to recompile for MeeGo Qt. Nokia has invested in developer version of the N9 (N950) not just to improve the platform but also get some apps in development.

Nokia N9 video ad leaks, teases with 12MP camera

A leaked teaser video shows a bunch of interesting details about the unreleased, unannounced Nokia N9 smartphone. Unfortunately, the fast-paced teaser leaves more questions than answers.

The Nokia N9 was always rumored as running whatever version of MeeGo is latest, but this video kinda suggests the user interface will be heavily influenced by Symbian Anna.

The 12MP camera on the other hand is not something new, as it's been present in previous leaks. But yes, this is the first time we get to see it confirmed semi-officially. We also see that it's got a 28mm wide-angle Carl Zeiss lens and an aperture of F2.8, so it sounds a lot like the unit we've seen in the N8. It's only not as bulging as on the N8. And it has a dual LED flash, not a xenon unit as the N8.
